We have put one of these into our demo house in Brisbane.

When it is up, you can barely notice it is there, but at a touch of a button, the lift comes down, and the projector is in place!!

Ring Doorbell Pro

Ring, the folks behind the self-titled Ring video doorbell, have a two-punch combo’s worth of news this morning: they’re launching a new model called the Ring Pro, and have raised a $61.2 million Series C.

The Ring Pro bumps up the specs on the standard model in just about every way that matters: the camera is 1080p vs 720p, it’s got 5Ghz WiFi in addition to 2.4Ghz, the faceplates (and thus the overall color of the bell) are swappable instead of locked for good out of the box, and it’s a good bit smaller than the original.

Like its predecessor, of course, it still has a two-way speaker built-in that hooks into a companion smartphone app, allowing you to answer your door from your phone from anywhere you’ve got a data connection. Don’t feel like getting off the couch to see who’s at the door? Check Ring. Halfway around the world when someone shady rings the bell and want them to think you’re home to avoid break-ins? Answer through the Ring app, act like you’re home.

Oh, and the Pro has one other cool trick over the original: you can set custom motion zones. Only care about motion that happens right on your front porch? Just draw a box around the bit you care about.

The smaller package comes with a small catch, depending on how you use it: unlike the standard Ring, the Ring Pro has no battery. The original Ring has a built-in rechargeable battery that allowed it to be used wirelessly for a few months at a time by people — like, say, apartment renters — who couldn’t go and rip their old chime off the wall. Ring Pro, meanwhile, must be wired into your home’s door bell chime circuit for power.

For the most part, that’s totally fine — in the long run, I imagine most people will want to wire it up anyway, because saying “sorry my doorbell didn’t work, I forgot to charge it” makes you sound like a crazy person. And if you need that battery, the standard Ring is still available.

Like with the original Ring, the company will replace the Ring Pro if a thief is gutsy enough to sneak up and pry it off your house.

Their $61.2M series C, meanwhile, is lead by KPCB with additional investment from Sir Richard Branson. The company had previously raised around $39 million.

Apple Watch

Why are we looking at the Apple Watch as a Home Automation Company?

Well, after having one for a couple of weeks, the benefits to the home are enormous.

There are many Automation companies coming out with Apple Watch apps such as Lutron and Crestron.  Many of our clients already use Apple TV's around the home, and even for this, the Apple Watch has built in functionality to control any of your Apple TV's from your wrist.  It is great for simple playing and pausing, or navigating around the menu.

Soon, we expect to see IP camera support, more companies like RTI bringing out upgrades to support the Apple Watch for door opening, volume control and choosing lighting themes around the house.

Exciting times for Home Automation.

NEW RTI Tx3

The T3x universal remote and home automation controller from Remote Technologies Inc. (RTI), has finally arrived after it appeared for the first time at CEDIA Expo 2013.

The T3x is a universal remote in the classic sense, with an IR output and a bank of commands in its IR library.

To integrate with a full slate of devices including A/V and home automation systems, the remote works with a range of RTI control hubs that support (proprietary) ZigBee, Wi-Fi, serial, I/O, IR, 433 MHz and sensing.

For even richer integration, the Wi-Fi built into the T3x facilitates dynamic graphics, IP cameras feeds, and wireless program updates.  Through RTI control hubs, the T3x can communicate two-way with a wide range of subsystems via IP and RS-232.

Besides its integration capabilities—available with other RTI controllers as well—the T3x stands out for its haptic feedback, grip sensors to keep the unit awake during use, and an accelerometer that provides instant-on response and control via movements.  Users can wave the thing around to control the TV volume or change the channels, for example.

And also, the wand has a built-in mic, speaker and front-facing camera for video intercom functionality.

Plus, the T3x has earned all sorts of rave reviews for its industrial design, and most recently won the 2015 CEA TechHome Mark of Excellence Award for interface product of the year.. The only criticism I’ve heard so far is: It’s late. Oh, and I believe it’s been mentioned that channel up/down should be on the right side, not the left.

Here’s the RTI handheld tally: The T2x introduced in 2012 and shipping in 2013, includes many of the same features as the T3x including the grip sensors, accelerometer and gesture control, but not the video camera functionality. The T2i looks similar to the T2x but lacks gesture controls and remote updates via Wi-Fi. The T3x is quite similar to the T2x but adds the video intercom and loses the numeric keypad in favor of more touchscreen real estate.
